Grant Funding Brief: Essential Information for Schools

With 2025 in full swing, schools across the country are looking for ways to fund important initiatives—from strengthening security to upgrading technology and improving emergency preparedness. Grants continue to be one of the best ways to secure those resources without straining school budgets.

Although recent challenges with federal grant disbursements have raised some concerns, new opportunities are still opening up and schools that stay informed and proactive will be in the best position to benefit.

What’s Happening With Federal Grant Funding?

Some schools have faced recent delays in accessing their awarded funds through ASAP.gov, the federal platform for grant disbursements. A temporary shutdown of the system caused concern among recipients, but the issue was resolved after a federal judge intervened and the decision to shutdown was changed by the administration.. Schools can now withdraw their funds as usual.

This situation serves as a reminder of how important it is to stay on top of funding changes. While existing grants are still in place, policy shifts are under discussion at agencies like DOJ, OJP, COPS, and DOE. Funding is expected to continue, but the details may change, and it’s crucial to stay informed. I am keeping a close watch on this. In the meantime, some great funding opportunities are available right now. 

FEMA Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP)

One of the best funding opportunities available right now is the FEMA Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP). This program provides grants for security equipment, training and services to help keep schools and nonprofit institutions safe.

• Funding: Schools can receive up to $200,000 per building, with a limit of three buildings per application.

• Deadlines: Most states require applications by April 2025, but Texas has an earlier deadline of March 13, 2025.

• Award Notifications: Funding decisions are expected in May 2025, with funds available through September 2028.

Each state handles applications differently, so it’s important to check local requirements. 

Texas applicants can find more details at Texas eGrants. While the 2025 program guide hasn’t been released yet, the 2024 version is a great resource to help schools get started.

Coming Soon: COPS School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP)

Another major funding opportunity to watch is the COPS School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP). This grant supports school security enhancements, including technology upgrades, staff training, and facility improvements.

• Funding: Schools can receive up to $500,000 per district over three years.

• Use of Funds: Money can be spent immediately, but schools must show how they’re implementing safety improvements over time.

• Status: Application details for the 2025 cycle will be announced soon.
