Phones Are Leaving. Attention is coming back.

The phone-free movement now reaches more than half the states, and 2026–2027 is the year many bell-to-bell policies take effect. The headline is fewer distractions. The quieter question is what fills the space they leave. When phones leave the room, attention returns to the front of the class, and the instructional surface and the teacher’s voice carry more of the day than they have in years. Two things have to hold for that to pay off. The room has to be worth the attention it just won back. And the school has to answer the question every phone-free policy raises from parents: if my child can’t reach me, how do we communicate. That answer is the school’s own communication backbone.
